SEGUE @ ODISSEI Conference for Social Science in the Netherlands 2023

This November, two of our members took part in the ODISSEI Conference for Social Science in the Netherlands 2023. This event aimed to unite a community of computational social scientists for discussions on topics such as data, methodologies, infrastructure, ethics, and theoretical aspects linked to the use of digital and computational techniques in social science research. ODISSEI, which serves as the research infrastructure for social science in the Netherlands, facilitates the connection of researchers with essential data, knowledge, and tools, enabling them to conduct innovative research and embrace the computational dimension in their social inquiries.

Clémentine Cottineau presented her project on Modeling urban economic segregation during Session 2.1, which explored the intersection of economic inequality and urban segregation. This project seeks to integrate multidisciplinary knowledge from geography/sociology and economics and apply it to causal modeling, utilizing statistical and agent-based approaches. The presentation outlined the preliminary findings of a systematic review of literature, examining the connections between economic inequality and urban segregation, with a focus on identifying causal pathways and hypothesized mechanisms. Additionally, the presentation discussed the empirical and simulation strategies employed to pinpoint the causal factors behind urban economic segregation in the Netherlands, highlighting the role of CBS microdata in this research endeavor.

Javier San Millán Tejedor shared his preliminary results of his Unveiling the Urban Divide: Novel Insights into Economic Segregation Using Fine-Grained Data working paper in Session 1.1. His research explores the increasing urban economic segregation driven by wealth and income disparities. He used detailed data from the Dutch Statistical Agency to study segregation patterns in Dutch metropolitan areas between 2003 and 2021. The study also examines differences between the segregation of affluence and poverty and identifies unique geographical patterns of segregation.
